Early Years

‘Every child deserves the best possible start in life and support to fulfil their potential. A child’s experience in the early years has a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right and it provides the foundation for children to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.’

(Early Years Foundation Stage Profile - Department for Children, Schools and Families 2012)

At Great Denham Primary School we welcome children into our Pre-School from the September after they turn 3 and then into Reception in the September after they turn 4.

Parents are a very important part of our Early Years department and are encouraged to become fully involved in their child's learning and development. They receive regular observations of their child, attend stay and play sessions as well as supporting trips, art days, performances and fabulous finishes.

Great Denham is an inclusive school where we inspire and empower our children to learn!

In our Early Years department we aim to create a safe, secure and engaging environment, where every child is supported and challenged to achieve their full potential, regardless of their starting point.

We believe that all children should be able to access a rich, engaging, purposeful curriculum that allows children to develop academically, socially and emotionally. We aim to create an environment where children can explore, question and problem solve through a mixture of high quality basic skills teaching and well-supported child-led learning.

Inspiring Excellence; Everyone, Every day.

We achieve this vision by:

  • Allowing children time to explore, problem solve and question
  • Providing highly qualified, motivated staff that can sensitively support and challenge each child in their own learning.
  • Working closely with parents and other professionals to ensure very child is supported appropriately
  • Providing immersive, engaging environments, where children can freely access their own resources both indoors and outdoors.
  • Providing an appropriate mixture of high-quality basic skills teaching and well-supported child-led learning.
  • Supporting the children to become independent learners, to take risks and challenge themselves.
  • Embedding and modelling our whole school values and soft skills in all that we do
  • Building the self confidence of each and every child to allow them to become confident, independent learners
  • Exposing the children to inspirational visitors and real life experiences in order to expand their knowledge, skills and aspirations.
  • Creating a smooth transition to year 1 and beyond through continuation of independent learning.

Inspire, explore, challenge and achieve!
